Chinese antiquities of the Tang Dynasty (618 - 906AD)

2008030
This very rare, gracefully modelled horse dates to the Northern Qi dynasty (550 - 577AD) and is an exceptional example. It stands firmly on slender legs head held high but looking down and slightly to the left. The mouth is open and teeth bared.
The forelock is bound and forms a horn like spike between the pricked ears, a common feature in the earlier Eastern Wei and Northern Qi horses.
Unusually, under the chin is a single conch shell-like attachment.
A knotted saddlecloth lies over the layered saddleboards; the saddle is secured by a crupper strap hung with tassels and linked over the hindquarters by a leather pad with five rows of ornamental bosses. A row of conches decorate the chest strap and the mane has been combed into separate locks.
Orange, vermillion, black and green pigments remain.
Height: 40cm.

2008018
An exceptionally fine Tang dynasty "fat lady" wearing long robes and her hands held out in front of her.
She stands 55 cm high. The hair is in the DuoMaji style (The Falling off the Horse Hair) and very unusually, her outer robe is split at the bottom right, temptingly revealing an orange undergarment.
Her serene expression and well defined details make this tall staue an excellent example from the golden period of Chinese history.

2008017
An exceptional pair of Tang "fat" ladies made during the middle of the dynasty.
They are an original pair that is to say, they were made to stand together. This can be confirmed by the height, lady on the left is 49cm and the right example 50cm, one sways towards the left and the other to the right, dress design and finally, one has a flower on her left slipper and the other a flower on the right slipper.

One holds a (terracotta model) of a bronze mirror in her left hand, her right hand is posed with outstretched fore finger. This example wears the DuoMaji (just fallen off the horse) hairstyle.

The other is holding a small dish with what appears to be a food offering in her right hand and her right hand is held out, palm up, in front. She sports a more complicated, fan-like hairstyle which is piled high on top of her head.

An exceptional pair with extremely rare poses.
